On Saturday, April 26, 2008, the Province Assembly accepted the recommendations of the sisters who were discerning for province leadership and elected the following sisters:

Celebration of 150 th Anniversary of Province Concludes

 

On Sunday, April 13, 2008, Sisters of St. Joseph gathered with associates, family members and friends for a Mass of Thanksgiving and a reception to conclude the year of celebration, commemorating our 150 th anniversary as the Albany Province. Most Rev. Howard J. Hubbard, bishop of Albany was the celebrant of the Mass, with Most Rev. James J. Moynihan, bishop of Syracuse, presiding. The event completed the celebration which began on October 20, 2007, when we gathered with clergy, family members, friends and parishioners at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Oswego, home of our first six sisters who traveled from St. Louis.: Mother Stanislaus Saul, superior (Germany); Sister Patricia Pyne (Ireland); Sister Flavia Waldron (Ireland); Sister M. Chrysostom McCann (USA); Sister Eusebius Verdin (USA); Sister Hyacinth Blanc (France).

Sisters Raise Awareness and Funds for Scleroderma

 

On Sunday, April 20, 2008, sisters, associates, family members, friends and members of the Scleroderma Foundation gathered in the Carondelet Hospitality Center at the PH for a fund-raiser entitled Sisters for Scleroderma Research . The event, presented in memory of Sister Marie James Kearns, Sister Marie Loyola Saunders (LA), and Nancy Rehfuss Goldberg, niece of Sister Mary Rehfuss, all of whom died from scleroderma, featured the best in CSJ talent!

       The PH Ensemble, consisting of Sisters Marianne Comfort, Marguerite Donovan, Elizabeth Emery, Joan Geannelis , Marion Honors, Pat Houlihan , Mary Rose Noonan, Mary Alice O'Connor, Esther Thomas Sexton, Rose Regina Smith and Margaret Totten , opened and concluded the show with rousing renditions of old-time favorites. Sister Anne Bryan Smollin , keynote speaker, presented Laughter: Medicine for the Soul, and held the audience in the palm of her hand with stories and proverbs, all filled with the perfect mixture of hilarity, reality and practicality. Sister Patricia St. John, featured pianist, received a standing ovation for her renditions of Bach's Goldberg Variations and Schuman's Arabesque in C Major, Opus 18, and Traumerei from Scenes from Childhood, Opus 15. The comic trio of Sisters Kate Arseneau , Fran Eustace and Pat Houlihan brought down the house with their presentation of Jack and Jill Interpretations, with Kate as singer, Fran as narrator and Pat as pianist.

         une Bender, director of patient education and support, for the Tri-State Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation, expressed gratitude on behalf of the foundation and presented Sister Mary Rose, who has scleroderma, with roses and the community with a plaque. Special thanks to all who promoted the event in their parishes and places of employment and to all the sisters who worked at and attended the afternoon. Together, we raised $10,555.00 for scleroderma research!

Sister Jubilarians Share 2,460 Years of Service

 

On Saturday, March 15, 2008, forty two (42) Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet marked 80, 75, 70, 60, 50 and 25 years of religious life at a liturgical and community celebration at Saint Joseph's Provincial House in Latham, New York. (A name in brackets indicates a Sister's former name.)

New Congregational Leadership Affirmed

The new Congregational Leadership Team of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet was affirmed on Saturday, January 12, 2008, at a ceremony in Holy Family Chapel at the Motherhouse in St. Louis. The members of the new team are Laura Bufano (Albany); Francine Costello (H); Susan Hames (SP); Catherine McNamee (A); and Elizabeth Ney (SL). The team was selected in July at the Congregational Chapter in St. Paul.

 

The affirmation was a remarkable event in our congregation's 358-year-old history. For over 172 years, our congregational leadership has been passed on at Carondelet.

 

During the ceremony on January 12, participants thanked the 2002-2008 leadership team of Sisters Joan Henehan , Karen Kennelly , Theresa Kvale , Joan Lescinski and Barbara Moore for “calling us to mystery and calling us to the more” through their honesty, integrity and deep reverence for the unique gifts that brought us to know ourselves both as individuals and as a congregation.

 

The members of the 2008-2014 Leadership Team, who were called forth and affirmed as “servant leaders,” blessed one another and the congregation with water from LePuy and Lyon.

Sister Joan Lescinski Inaugurated

Sister Joan Lescinski , CSJ, PhD, was inaugurated as the thirteenth president of St. Ambrose University in Davenport , Iowa , on Friday, October 5, 2007. From 1998 to 2007, Sister Joan served as president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, located in the town of the same name in Indiana , where she brought the college to record gains in enrollment, facilitated the development of institutional strategic and master plans, and introduced several undergraduate and two new graduate academic programs. During her tenure, the college invested $10 million in campus facilities and experienced a significant increase in its number of donors. Among the positions Sister Joan held prior to assuming the SMWC presidency were vice president for academic affairs and dean at Fontbonne University, St. Louis, MO and associate dean of academic affairs at Avila University, Kansas City, MO. Sister Joan has taught English at the college level since 1974. Sister Joan earned a doctorate in English literature from Brown University and a master's and bachelor's degrees in English literature from The College of Saint Rose. In addition, Sister Joan holds certificates in fund-raising management and educational management from Indiana and Harvard Universities respectively. She has been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 41 years.

Sister Jeanne Marie Professes Perpetual Vows

Sister Jeanne Marie Gocha, CSJ, made her profession of perpetual vows as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet on Saturday, October 13, 2007, during a joy-filled Eucharistic Liturgy at St. Joseph 's Provincial House in Latham , NY . Sister Jeanne Marie was born in Riverhead, NY, daughter of the late Stefan and Marcella Gocha. She is presently principal of St. Mary's School in Ballston Spa , NY . Sister Jeanne Marie has a bachelor's degree in French and secondary education from Holy Family College in Philadelphia , a master's degree in religious studies/youth ministry from LaSalle University in Philadelphia and a master's degree in educational administration from Boston College . Previous to entering the Sisters of St. Joseph, Sister Jeanne Marie was director of religious education at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in West Boylston, MA, and principal of St. Mary's School in Shrewsbury , MA . In addition, she taught in Connecticut , New York and Massachusetts as a member of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Sister Jeanne Marie was joined in the awesome celebration of profession by over 300 family members, friends and Sisters of St. Joseph.

 

In the ritual for profession, Sister Jeanne Marie made the perpetual vows of religious chastity, poverty and obedience, according to the Constitution of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. As part of a community tradition, her vow formula included an expression of her intention to grow in the humility and love characteristic of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Sister Yvonne St. Hilaire, CSJ

Sister Yvonne St. Hilaire , CSJ, 88, died Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at St. Joseph 's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Yvonne had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 70 years. Sister Yvonne, the former Velma Alma St. Hilaire , was born in Hoosick Falls , NY , on November 20, 1919, daughter of the late Joseph and Yvonne Dumouchel St. Hilaire. She graduated from St. Mary's High School, Hoosick Falls , and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy , NY, on March 19, 1938. Sister Yvonne received a bachelor's degree in French from The College of Saint Rose and taught elementary grades and French and English in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. In addition, she served in St. Mary's Home, Binghamton; St. Joseph's Home, Troy; performed in-service work at St. Joseph's Seminary and St. Joseph's Provincial House and volunteered at Samaritan Hospital and Our Lady of Hope Residence. Sister Yvonne was a devoted teacher who loved young children. A woman of deep faith, she was a hard worker with a generous spirit and a giving heart. Sister Yvonne dedicated her best effort at whatever task she undertook and was grateful for her many blessings. She frequently expressed her heart's joy through beautiful singing in her rich alto voice. During her last days, Sister Yvonne truly looked forward to her final homecoming. Sister Yvonne is survived by her beloved sister, Sister Adelina St. Hilaire , CSJ, of Latham; her brothers, Donald and Raymond St. Hilaire , both of Hoosick Falls; many nieces, nephews, friends and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Yvonne was predeceased by her sisters, Leona, Valeda and Alice; her brothers, William and Harvey; and many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Yvonne's funeral Liturgy was be held Monday, January 14, from the chapel of St. Joseph 's Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Sister Catherine Marie Giglio , CSJ

Sister Catherine Marie Giglio , CSJ, 70, died Monday, March 3, 2008 at St. John the Evangelist Convent, New Hartford, N.Y. Sister Catherine had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 51 years. Sister Catherine Marie, the former Marlene Giglio , was born in Utica , NY on June 26, 1937, daughter of the late Patrick and Helen Atwell Giglio . She graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on August 15, 1957. Sister Catherine completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at The College of Saint Rose and taught for 47 years in elementary schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. In addition, she served as director of social-justice ministry for the Albany Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. At the time of her death, Sister Catherine Marie was on the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes School in Utica . Throughout her life, Sister Catherine inspired many with her humble, gentle nature, her calm, caring attitude and her deep commitment to faith. Her contagious smile and her joy of life complemented her passion for justice and her love for the ministry of education. Sister Catherine continued to inspire those around her as she faced pain, sickness and death with courage and grace. Sister Catherine Marie is survived by her beloved family, including her brothers, Nicholas (Sandy), Robert (Lorraine), William, and John (Faith) Giglio ; her sisters, Jane Puleo , Frances (William) Lytle, Adrienne Giglio , Cathy (Anthony) Giruzzi , Lisa (Jack) Malos ; and by many nieces, nephews and their families. In addition, Sister Catherine is survived by her local religious community at St. John the Evangelist Convent, New Hartford: Sister Martha Vincent Larkin and Sister Rose Benedict Troy; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Catherine was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Helen, and many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Catherine Marie's funeral was held on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica , where a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated. Interment was held on Friday, March 7, at St. Joseph 's Provincial House in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery . Sister Dolores Stack, CSJ

Sister Dolores Stack, CSJ, (Sister Mary Bernard), 76, died Wednesday evening, March 12, 2008, at Francis House, Syracuse. Sister Dolores had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 56 years. Sister Dolores was born July 13, 1931, in Syracuse , daughter of the late William and Lillian McNamara Stack. She graduated from Eastwood High School and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on February 11, 1952. At the beginning of her religious life, Sister Dolores did catechetical work in Endicott and Oswego. In addition, she cared for the senior sisters at St. Joseph 's Convent in Troy. After working for eight years at The College of Saint Rose, Albany, Sister Dolores began working in the area of social services with a particular emphasis on meeting the needs of the elderly and the poor. For seven years, she ministered to the people of St. Lucy's Parish in Syracuse and then began a 29-year career serving the elderly at Loretto Geriatric Center, first as an aide and then as a licensed practical nurse. Sister Dolores' last ministry was at Greenpoint Keepsake Village at the Hearth in Syracuse. Sister Dolores was a competent, hard-working and practical woman, always willing to be of service. Her deep belief in God's sustaining care and her self-sacrificing nature led Sister Dolores to be dedicated and generous in her ministry with the elderly. Her creativity added to a beautiful holiday atmosphere in the various convents in which she lived. Sister Dolores will be remembered lovingly by family, friends and those who received her care. Sister Dolores is survived by her beloved sisters, Veronica Theoret of Alexandria Bay, and Mary Margaret Aversa of Syracuse; her local community at Blessed Sacrament Convent, Syracuse: Sisters Catherine Doyle, Kathleen Eiffe, Marionella Graham and Maureen Murphy; many friends; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Dolores was predeceased by her beloved sister, Anne, and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Dolores' funeral Liturgy was held March 17 at St. Daniel's Church, Syracuse. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Margaret Keeshan , CSJ

Sister Margaret Keeshan , CSJ, (Sister Clarence Paul), 92, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at St. Joseph 's Provincial House in Latham. Sister Margaret had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 72 years. Sister Margaret was born in Albany , daughter of the late Clarence and Elizabeth Flanagan Keeshan . After graduating from Cathedral Academy , she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1934. Sister Margaret received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in biology, both from The College of Saint Rose and a doctorate in biology from St. John's University . After teaching at St. Lawrence School and Catholic Central High School in Troy , and St. Lucy's High School in Syracuse , Sister Margaret served several years at The College of Saint Rose as professor of biology. In 1966, she was named president of Saint Rose, a position she held for four years. After completing her term as president, Sister Margaret taught biology and mathematics to Native-American children at the Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge , South Dakota , before returning to Saint Rose to resume her professorship in biology. Upon her retirement from Saint Rose, Sister Margaret remained on campus for another eight years where she was a gardener and a prayer witness, still teaching informally the beauty of creation. Sister Margaret was a scholar, a scientist, a teacher and a woman of faith. Whether she was showing her students the complexities of cells and the sheer beauty of all living things, developing relationships with important college constituencies or tending to her rose garden, Sister Margaret imbued her tasks with gentleness, humor and integrity. Her generous spirit will rest in a high place in the hearts of those who love her. Sister Margaret is survived by several cherished nieces and nephews and their families, many friends and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved brothers and sisters: Rev. Paul Keeshan , Clarence Keeshan , Jane Doyle and Elizabeth Duclos ; and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Dorothy Anne Flood, CSJ

Sister Dorothy Anne Flood, CSJ (Sister Anne Robert), 81, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany . Sister Dorothy had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 64 years. Sister Dorothy was born in Syracuse on April 12, 1926, daughter of the late Charles and Marion Edgeworth Flood. After graduating from St. Vincent de Paul High School and attending Powelson Business Institute, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1944. Sister Dorothy received a bachelor's degree in music from The College of Saint Rose, a master's degree in music from Boston University and a doctorate in music education from Columbia University . In addition, she pursued post-graduate studies at Ohio State University , focusing on music in medieval life and culture. For twelve years, Sister Dorothy taught music in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses and was one of the first Sisters of St. Joseph to go to Fort Edward where she taught piano and worked in religious education. In 1958, she began a 38-year career in the music department of The College of Saint Rose, beginning as a piano instructor, moving to professor of music and serving as department chairperson. In 1994, Sister Dorothy was part of Sisters in Song , a national choir of Catholic sisters who made several recordings in Anaheim , California . Sister Dorothy possessed an enthusiastic and impassioned commitment both to her music and to her students. She was gifted with the ability to help students get to the core of a piece of music and find the best mechanism to make that piece come to life. In addition, Sister Dorothy was an extraordinary storyteller with a humorous anecdote for every occasion. Sister Dorothy was devoted to her faith, her family, her friends and her religious community, and her energetic presence will be missed by many. Sister Dorothy is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families, with special mention of Mary, Leo and Olivia Wong whose devotion was such a comfort; by many friends, including her dear friend, Sister Mary Anne Nelson; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Rev. Robert Flood, CSB; by her sister, Eleanor Murphy; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Dorothy's funeral Liturgy was held Monday, April 7, in the chapel of St. Joseph 's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Stephen Maria Dixon, CSJ

Sister Stephen Maria Dixon, CSJ, 84, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at St. Joseph 's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Stephen Maria had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 61 years. Sister Stephen Maria was born Elizabeth Lucy Dixon on July 29, 1923, in Schenectady, NY, daughter of the late Stephen and Millie M. Berryann Dixon. After graduating from St. Columba's High School in Schenectady , Sister Stephen worked for General Electric for four years. On March 19, 1947, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and professed final vows on August 15, 1952. Sister Stephen received a bachelor's degree in biology from The College of Saint Rose and was a licensed radiologic technologist at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam . While serving at St. Mary's Hospital for 53 years, Sister Stephen was an x-ray technician, chief technician and supervisor of the imaging department; in her later years, she was a receptionist and clerk at the hospital. Along with her beloved friend, Sister Anthony Marie Leary, Sister Stephen Maria was an icon at St. Mary's Hospital and in the Amsterdam area. She was recognized for her keen intellect and powers of observation in the medical-imaging field. There is no doubt that Sister Stephen Maria will always be a legend in the field of radiology at St. Mary's Hospital as she inspired others to recognize the values of excellence, integrity and compassion. In addition, her beautiful singing voice and talent in illustration added the perfect touch to many celebrations. In her final illness, Sister Stephen's smile radiated the kindness, gentleness and courage that marked her life of faith. Sister Stephen Maria is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families; by many friends and colleagues, including her treasured friend, Sister Anthony Marie Leary; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She was predeceased by three brothers: James, George and Robert Dixon; by one sister, Mary Jeanette Riley; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Stephen Maria's funeral Liturgy was held Tuesday, April 15, at 9:00 a.m. in the chapel of St. Joseph 's Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Contributions in Sister Stephen's memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet -Shaker Road , Latham , NY 12110 .

Betty Horton

Betty Horton, 75, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at St. Joseph 's Provincial House, Latham, where she had resided for the past 41 years. Betty was born in the Utica-Rome area on February 27, 1933, and spent her young years in Rome Development Center . In 1967, she moved to St. Joseph 's Provincial House where she lived with her beloved friends and served with dedication and diligence in the general laundry. Betty retired last year and continued her service as a volunteer in the Bright Horizons program at the Provincial House. Betty was a gentle woman who touched all she met with her twinkling eyes and ready smile. Her thoughtful, giving spirit will live on in the Provincial House Community. Betty was a treasured member of the GB Community at the Provincial House and a devoted, long-time member of the Newtonville Methodist Church . She is survived by her dear friends: Mary Morache , Lillian Broderick, Kathleen Matthews, Peggy Brown and Delores Dunlop; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Betty's wake was held in the chapel of St. Joseph 's Provincial House on Tuesday, April 29. Funeral services were held in the Provincial House with Betty's burial in the cemetery at the Provincial House.

Sister's Spotlight

SISTER JUDY HOWLEY

Sister Judy Howley was honored at the Cathedral Academy at Pompei by the Vietnamese Community of Syracuse. In the award letter to Sister Judy, Tony Pham, Dr. Michael Tong and Sinh Truong, chairpersons of the event, wrote: "In Vietnamese tradition, the week before a Lunar New Year 's Eve is a period of Tiec Tri An , or the end-of-the-year celebration. It is a time to count our blessings. Above all, it is a time of remembrance. We have always felt a sense of enormous gratitude to you for your help, your love and your guidance in resettling us, the Vietnamese refugees, in Syracuse and Central New York after the fall of South Vietnam in 1975. Your tireless commitment and leadership have helped us in our work, in our religious practices and spiritual lives, in our youth's academic performance and in the social well-‑being of our community. Sister Judy, we will remember your name and that of the Sisters of St. Joseph when we recount the history and growth of our Vietnamese community in Syracuse. Thanks to you, we are more prepared to face any future challenges as we continue to build our new lives as Vietnamese Americans. "

 

 

Sister Mary Jo Tallman was honored at Herkimer County Community College during the tenth, annual Great Heroes Breakfast , sponsored by the American Red Cross, Mohawk Valley Chapter. Sister Mary Jo received the Blood Services Award , given to a person who is committed to the safe, adequate supply of blood for lifesaving medical responses. Mary Jo has donated 102 units of blood and is a member of the Red Cross Century Club. In nominating Sister Mary Jo for the award, Sharon Van Kuren wrote: "Sister Mary Jo is like the Energizer Bunny in that she keeps giving and giving and giving! Her entire life has been spent in service to others, and her commitment to donating blood every 56 days is on her calendar faithfully. In addition, Sister Mary Jo is willing to be a bone-marrow donor and plans to donate her organs and eyes when the time comes. "

 

 

Sister Marion's Website Launched

Sister Marion C. Honors, CSJ, now has a website which exhibits her artwork. Go to www.marionchonorscsj.com to see Sister Marion's beautiful creations. The site was designed and implemented by Sister Marion's Goddaughter, Caitlin McCartan, who is web content manager at the Boston University School of Law.

St. Bernard's Institute was selected by the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis of the Albany Diocese to receive the 2007 Bishop Broderick Award at Spring Enrichment. The award, which was given on May 14, honors St. Bernard's for the role it has played in the spiritual and theological formation of hundreds of men and women throughout the Albany Diocese, in the wider Christian community and beyond. The honor is a tribute to all who have played a part in the establishment and continuation of St. Bernard's in the Albany Diocese, especially Sisters Danielle Bonetti and Katherine Hanley (pictured on the left).

Sister Patricia Conron has been selected to be honored by the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis of the Diocese of Albany at the office's fourth Celebration of Ministry Dinner on June 11. This year's celebration will honor catechetical and youth-ministry leadership. Sister Pat is one of eight honorees to receive the Mary Reed Newland Award for her outstanding contribution to catechetical ministry in the diocese. The award is given “to recognize and express the diocese's gratitude to exceptional ministers who have embraced catechetical and youth ministry with faith, love and generosity and each of whom has given his/her life to form and nurture the faith of children, youth and adults in the diocese.”

 

Sister James Michael Ryan was honored with a special recognition by Albany County Legislator Bob Betson at a Mother's Day luncheon at The Watervliet Senior Center on May 11. Sister James was acknowledged for her lifetime of dedication and advocacy to the service of others. As Mr. Beston stated, “Sister James was a mentor to the young for 49 years as she devoted her life to teaching. After retiring from teaching, Sister worked just as hard in her advocacy for senior citizens, with special attention to the poor and homebound, bringing the Eucharist to the sick and homebound, bringing food and clothing to the elderly poor. Sister James will never be forgotten by hundreds of senior she so deeply touches. For the past four years, Sister James has been actively serving as board secretary and spiritual counselor to the Watervliet Senior Center . She is loved, admired and greatly appreciated for all of her ongoing work in the Watervliet community.
