Carondelet Music Center's Swine Flu Considerations
Based on assessment of all available information and following several expert consultations, Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization, raised the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to 5. She stated that all countries should immediately activate their pandemic-preparedness plans. At this stage, effective and essential measures include heightened surveillance, early detection and treatment of cases and infection control in all health facilities.
Speaking at the White House, President Barach Obama said that the outbreak had created a "serious situation,"requiring the Autmost precautions." "Every American should know that the federal government is prepared to do whatever is necessary to control the impact of this virus," the president said.
In New York State, Governor David A. Paterson announced that he has activated New York State's health-emergency-preparedness plan and has put the State on high alert to quickly identify and respond to any cases of swine flu. As a course of normal operating procedure during events such as this, it is common and welcomed for the Center for Disease Control to make a declaration of public-health emergency. This enables the State and localities to receive quicker access to vital resources and other necessary assistance.
