Justice Action Alerts

From Sister Doreen Glynn, CSJ, Province Justice Coordinator

Poverty
The Census data released last week is disturbing, showing that a record number of Americans are living in poverty and that the median household income continues to fall. The Joint Economic Committee of Congress report shows that 14.9% of New York’s population, roughly 2.8 million, was living below the official poverty line in 2010, a 1.3% increase since 2007. 21.2% of children under 18 live in poverty, 10.9% of people over 65 are in poverty.

Please contact your legislators and urge them to help these struggling Americans NOW by passing legislation that creates jobs and by protecting programs for low-income people from budget cuts. To accomplish this, we need more revenue and cuts in wasteful military. A sample letter might be like the following:
Dear Senator:
As a Sister of St. Joseph committed to serve persons who are poor, I am deeply disturbed to hear that the Census has reported that record numbers of Americans were living in poverty last year. More than a third of our population was living on a low income, defined as less than twice the federal poverty level.
I urge you to act NOW to help these struggling families and individuals. Please pass legislation that creates jobs and preserves programs for low-income people. I firmly believe that we need to raise revenue and cut wasteful military spending in order to accomplish this. Slashing Medicaid, education and other critical services, as some are proposing, will only make the situation worse.
Thank you for your attention to this critical situation.
Sincerely,

Death Penalty
Last week Troy Davis was executed. Despite the lack of physical evidence, despite the recantations by seven of nine eyewitnesses, and despite a global campaign by more than a million people insisting there was simply too much doubt, Georgia put this man to death.
But in this moment of sadness and anger, it’s up to all of us to make sure that Davis' struggle does not die with him. We must act, so that the fight to fix a criminal justice system riven by racial and class disparities and to stop our country from executing the innocent is made stronger because of his example.

Today, please consider signing Amnesty International’s pledge to fight the death penalty through the link provided below:
