In Remembrance

Sister Toni Ann Murphy, CSJ

Sister Toni Ann Murphy, CSJ, 74, died Sunday, February 25, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 47 years.

Sister Toni was born March 4, 1943 in Poughkeepsie, NY, daughter of Vincent and Anna Rose Bucci. After graduating from the Academy of the Holy Names, Albany, and before she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, she worked for the New York Telephone Company and subsequently taught at St. Ann’s School and Cathedral Academy, Albany, and St. Francis School, Troy. On August 4, 1971, Sister Toni entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph and professed final vows on August 6, 1979. She received a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in elementary education, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 32 years, Sister Toni taught in schools of the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. After her retirement from teaching, she volunteered at St. Joseph’s Provincial House as receptionist and as computer instructor to the Senior Sisters.

Sister Toni was a woman of faith, a devoted Sister of St. Joseph, a creative and compassionate educator and a loving and loyal friend. She enjoyed both the excitement of traveling to new places and the quiet and serenity of her annual retreat. She had a penchant for shopping for a bargain and delighted in preserving memories through her hobby as an amateur photographer. Proud of her Irish heritage, Sister Toni was, indeed, blessed with a quick wit, the gift of gab and an ingenious aptitude for storytelling. In fact, her whip-fast sense of humor helped her through many years of chronic illness. Sister Toni’s life taught us that gratuitous acts of kindness, one by one, can change the world, and she will be dearly missed.

Sister Toni is survived by several relatives and friends and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased on October 25, 2017 by her dear friend, Sister Mary Herman Marhafer.

Sister Toni’s Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, March 2, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Contributions in Sister Toni’s memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110.
