Sister Mary Laurentia Ryan, CSJ
Sister Mary Laurentia Ryan, CSJ, 96, died Friday, April 1, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 76 years.
Sister Mary Laurentia, the former Gertrude Loretta Ryan, was born in Clarendon, VT, on December 12, 1919, daughter of the late James and Agnes Rourke Ryan. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Academy in Rutland, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1940 and professed final vows on August 15, 1946. Sister Mary Laurentia completed her undergraduate studies in business from The College of Saint Rose and her graduate studies in business from the University at Albany (SUNY). For 45 years, she taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, as well as in Honesdale, PA. For the last five years of her active ministry, Sister Mary Laurentia was a pastoral associate in St. John the Evangelist/St. Mary Magdalene Parish in Honesdale.
Sister Mary Laurentia was a prayerful, gentle woman with a profound love of God and a deep devotion to the Eucharist, St. Joseph and the rosary. Her remarkable appreciation of the gift of God’s creation was expressed through her efforts at recycling and conserving power and water. In her last years of declining health, Sister Mary Laurentia was truly grateful to her caregivers from the nursing staff and frequently expressed her gratitude. Near and dear to Sister Mary Laurentia’s heart was “Pennies for Peru,” a project she coordinated at the Provincial House to raise money for the ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Peru. Over the years, she led the campaign which has resulted in thousands of dollars.
Sister Mary Laurentia is survived by several nieces and nephews of the Doney and Richards families, many dear friends and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John Ryan; and by her sisters, Catherine Doney and Mary Richards.
Sister Mary Laurentia’s Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham.
