In Remembrance

Sister Theresa Marie Finnerty, CSJ

Sister Theresa Marie Finnerty, CSJ, 85, died Friday, November 21, 2014, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 66 years.

Sister Theresa was born on May 30, 1929 in Utica, NY, daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Murray Finnerty. Raised in Verona and Rome, NY, she graduated from St. Aloysius Academy. Sister Theresa entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1948 and professed final vows on August 15, 1953. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 60 years, Sister Theresa taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including the following: St. John the Evangelist School, Syracuse; Our Lady of Solace School, Syracuse; St. Mary's Academy, Glens Falls; St. Joseph's School, Green Island; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, Amsterdam; and St. Brigid's Regional Catholic School, Watervliet. Sister Theresa served at St. Brigid's School and Parish for 38 years and retired to St. Joseph's Provincial House in 2010.

Sister Theresa was a humble, unassuming woman of faith who, like St. Joseph, her patron, remained in the background, always with a willingness to serve those in need. An excellent educator, she imbued her young students with her own love of learning and the joy of reading. Sister Theresa delighted in preparing hundreds of children to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. A talented cook and baker, Sister Theresa took great satisfaction in generously sharing the results of her culinary art. Her quiet but engaging sense of humor, delivered with a twinkle of the eye, was with Sister Theresa to the end, as was her gratitude and appreciation for even the smallest acts of kindness. Sister Theresa's warm heart and gentle spirit will leave us lasting memories of this beloved family member, loyal friend and devoted Sister of St. Joseph.

Sister Theresa is survived by her sister, Sister Rosita Joseph Finnerty, CSJ; several cousins and their families, with special mention of Alice Madden, Terry and Lynn Madden, Kathy and Wayne Arsenault, Mary Ellen Gallagher, Betty Finnerty, Norine Woost, Rev. Tom Woost, Rev. Michael Woost, Rev. David Woost, Jon Woost, Christopher Woost, Philip Woost and James Woost and Rev. Vincent Finnerty, CM; many friends, especially those from her years in Watervliet; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Theresa was predeceased by her sister, Sister Rose Finnerty, CSJ, and many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Sister Theresa Marie’s funeral Liturgy was held on Wednesday, November 26, at 10:30 a.m. from the chapel of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
