Sister Maureen McCarthy, CSJ
Sister Maureen McCarthy, CSJ, 88, died Saturday, January 21, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. Sister Maureen had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 70 years.
Sister Maureen was born Helen Margaret McCarthy on June 29, 1917, in Syracuse, NY, daughter of the late John and Mary Woulfe McCarthy. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Syracuse and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1936. She received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose and taught elementary grades in schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses for over four decades. Upon retiring from teaching in 1981, Sister Maureen moved to St. Joseph’s Provincial House where she tutored and did inservice work.
Throughout her life, Sister Maureen shared generously her gentle spirit, her warm care for children, her ever-present kindness in word and action and her deep love of God.
Sister Maureen leaves her beloved brother and sister, Robert McCarthy, of Syracuse, and Betty Martin of Bridgeport, and their families, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph, her sister, Sister Mary Jane, CSJ, and many dearly loved friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Maureen’s funeral Liturgy was held Wednesday, January 25 in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
