Sister Jean Martin Hyde, CSJ


Sister Jean Martin Hyde, CSJ, the former Mary Alice Hyde, 90, died Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, New York, after a brief illness. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 72 years.

Sister Jean Martin was born June 21, 1923 in Rome, NY, daughter of the late Martin and Alice Redmond Hyde. After graduating from St. Aloysius Academy, Rome, in 1940, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, in 1942. Sister Jean Martin received a bachelor’s degree in education from The College of Saint Rose and a master’s degree in Library Science from St. John’s University, Jamaica, New York. For over 17 years, Sister Jean Martin taught in elementary schools in the Syracuse Dioceses. After her years of teaching elementary school, Sister Jean Martin served as the school librarian at Bishop Grimes High School in Syracuse and Catholic Central High School in Troy, New York for 26 years. Upon her retirement from teaching, Sister Jean Martin volunteered her services in the Province Treasurer’s Office at St. Joseph’s Provincial House. Sister Jean Martin loved being a school librarian because it was in this setting that she could share her own respect and gratitude for reading and learning. She had a great devotion to the celebration of the Eucharist and to the rosary. Sister Jean Martin had a deep love and admiration for her family, her friends and for the Sisters of St. Joseph. Based on the strength of her relationship with God, family and community, Sister Jean Martin met her responsibilities with dedication, diligence and grace.

Sister Jean Martin is survived by her niece, Maureen Zumpano of Whitesboro, and her nephew, Kevin Hyde of Utica, several cousins, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Jean was predeceased by her dearly loved parents, Martin and Alice Hyde; her sister, Sister Alice Loretta Hyde, CSJ; her brothers, James and John (Cecilia); and many wonderful friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Sister Jean Martin funeral Liturgy was held Saturday, June 21 at 10:30 a.m. from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
