Sister Dorothy Austikolins, CSJ

Sister Dorothy Austikolins, CSJ, 99, died Sunday, May 11, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. Sister Dorothy had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 80 years.

Sister Dorothy, the former Ann Veronica Austikolins, was born in August 28, 1914, in Athol, MA, daughter of the late Stanley and Veronica Nuerke Austikolins. She was raised in Worcester, MA, and graduated from the Worcester High School of Commerce. On August 15, 1934, Sister Dorothy entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, and professed final vows on August 15, 1939. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The College of Saint Rose and taught for 44 years in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including: Keaveny Academy, Cohoes; St. Mary’s School, Little Falls; St. Brigid’s School, Syracuse; St. Patrick’s School, Utica; Cathedral Academy, Albany; St. Peter’s School, Saratoga Springs; and St. Brigid’s School, Watervliet. In addition, Sister Dorothy worked for 17 years in the sewing room at St. Joseph’s Provincial House.

Sister Dorothy was a gentle, refined woman of faith who found great joy in serving others. Proud of her heritage, Sister Dorothy said: “I come from a long line of noble, hard-working, even heroic, Lithuanian land owners, some of whom gave their lives during the many tumultuous times that Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire.” Blessed with the same work ethic, Sister Dorothy was a gifted teacher and a talented seamstress who entered wholeheartedly into whatever task she undertook. A devoted Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Dorothy embodied the community’s call to bring God’s unifying love to all she met, and she will be dearly missed.

Sister Dorothy is survived by her nieces and nephews, their spouses and families: Karen Wylie, Diane Riopel, and George, Jeffrey, Mark and Paul Lamotte; her niece-in-law, Joan Lawrence; many friends, with special mention of Dr. Janet Gargiulo; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Frank Collins; her sisters, Helyn Lamotte, Elizabeth Alavosius and Adele Lawrence; her nephew, Paul Lawrence; her aunt, Sister Alice Francis Austikolins, CSJ; and many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
