Sister Alice Marie Welch, CSJ

Sister Alice Marie (Sister Eileen Joseph) Welch, CSJ, 93, died Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 75 years.

Sister Alice Marie was born February 11, 1912, the daughter of the late James and Brigid Ryan Welch; she was raised on the family farm in Eagle Mills with her six siblings. After graduating from Catholic Central High School, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1931. Sister Alice Marie received a bachelor’s degree in social studies from The College of Saint Rose and a master’s degree and doctorate in history from Fordham University. In the early years of her religious life, Sister Alice taught in elementary schools in Troy, Albany and Amsterdam. For 37 years, she served as professor of history at The College of Saint Rose, where she distinguished herself as an expert in her field. She was a teacher par excellence who shared her remarkable knowledge with equally notable care and concern to generations of students.
After her retirement from teaching, Sister Alice Marie volunteered in the library at the college and as the hospitality coordinator at St. Joseph’s Provincial House. Her life as a member of the Welch family and the Sisters of St. Joseph was marked by dedication and pride.
Sister Alice Marie leaves her beloved sister, Eileen, her nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. She was predeceased by her brothers, Edward, Daniel, James and Joseph, her sister, Mary (Mae) Carhart, and many dearly loved friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Alice Marie’s funeral Liturgy was held Friday (today), January 27, in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
