Sister Christine Joseph Yanone, CSJ


Sister Christine Joseph Yanone, CSJ, the former Rose Elizabeth Yanone, 87, died Saturday, February 4 at St. Joseph’s Provincial House. Sister Christine had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 68 years.

Sister Christine was born September 12, 1918 in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of the late Joseph and Christina Simone Yanone. She graduated from McKinleyHigh School in Schenectady and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1937. Sister Christine prepared for her teaching career at The College of Saint Rose and taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses for 45 years; for 39 of those years, she taught first grade in Syracuse, HudsonFalls, Cohoes, Troy, Hudson and Albany. For 33 years of her religious life, Sister Christine served in St. Augustine’s School and Parish.
 
Upon retiring from teaching, she was an effective, creative fund-raiser for St. Augustine’s School where she used the same skills she had mastered in her long-time development efforts for the Sisters of St. Joseph. In 1996, Sister Christine moved to St. Joseph’s Provincial House where she continued to share her generosity, care and concern for sisters and staff alike. She was devoted to her family, her community and her friends, and that love was conveyed through her prayers, visits, baking skills, phone calls and other expressions of warmth.
 
Sister Christine leaves her dearly loved sister, Anna Czrew, of Schenectady; her nieces and nephews; her devoted friend, Archbishop Harry Flynn of Minneapolis/St. Paul; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She was predeceased by her dear sisters and brother, Millie DeMarco, Angie Rosse and Joseph Yanone, and by many beloved friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
 
Sister Christine Joseph’s funeral Liturgy was held Tuesday, February 7 in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
