Sister Elisabeth Colby, CSJ (Sister Anne Maurice)
Sister Elisabeth Colby, CSJ, (Sister Anne Maurice), 92, died Friday, May 10, 2013, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham, NY. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 72 years.
Sister Elisabeth was born on September 14, 1920, in Little Falls, NY, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Anne Connors Colby. After graduating from St. Mary's Academy, Sister Elisabeth entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1939, and professed final vows on August 15, 1944. Sister Elisabeth received a bachelor's degree in education from The College of Saint Rose and a master's degree in music education from the Catholic University of America. For 56 years, Sister Elisabeth taught piano, music and Latin in schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses, including 23 years at Rome Catholic High School. In addition, she worked for 12 years as a volunteer at St. Peter's Parish, Rome. In 2009, Sister Elisabeth retired to St. Joseph's Provincial House.
Sister Elisabeth was an excellent teacher with a comprehensive knowledge of music and the rare ability to inspire and motivate her students. Sister Elisabeth's passion for communicating her love of music was demonstrated year after year as she directed state-recognized choral festivals and musical productions. With her gifts of patience, compassion and humor, she succeeded in imparting to hundreds of students the joy of learning and the desire to succeed. Sister Elisabeth's contagious smile was never more evident than when she was chatting with friends, baking cookies or visiting her favorite dogs! A faithful friend and a devoted Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Elisabeth's presence will long remain with us.
Sister Elisabeth is survived by her nephew, Roy C. Ledger of Pahrump, NV; by her niece, Sheila Mack of Cary, NC, and their families; by many friends; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Elisabeth was predeceased by her brothers, James P. Colby and Charles P. Colby; by her sister, Mary M. Ledger; by her nephew, Charles P. Colby, Jr.; and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Elisabeth's funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
