Sister Joel Marie Gratton, CSJ
Sister Joel Marie Gratton, CSJ, the former Marie Margaret Gratton, 87, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 54 years.
Sister Joel Marie was born in Troy, NY, on May 18, 1918, the only child of the late Elmer and Josephine Hourigan Gratton. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Grammar School and CatholicCentralHigh School. After working for the New York State Department of Labor in budget control and payroll for eleven years, Sister Joel entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1952 and professed final vows in 1959.
Sister Joel Marie received a bachelor’s degree in business education from The College of Saint Rose and a master’s degree in business education from SUNY/Albany. In addition, she pursued further studies in library science and computer technology. Sister Joel began her ministerial experience as an elementary teacher in Rome, NY, and subsequently taught business in St. Ann’s High School and Cardinal McCloskey (Maginn) High School, Albany; St. Patrick’s High School, Catskill; Keveny Memorial Academy, Cohoes; and Catholic Central High School, Troy. In addition, Sister Joel worked in the Albany Diocesan School Office and served as librarian at Sacred Heart School, Troy.
Sister Joel Marie was a woman of conviction and a dedicated teacher, combining the business acumen, and organizational skills she acquired while working at the Department of Labor with a desire to prepare young people for the business world. In her later years, she put her business skills to creative use and spent many hours in the computer lab at the Provincial House.
Sister Joel is survived by her cousins, Mary Carter of Watervliet, and Mary McKeever Arnold of Troy, and their families, and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She was predeceased by beloved parents and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Joel Marie’s funeral Liturgy was held Friday, April 7 in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
