Sister Christine Maria Barton, CSJ


Sister Christine Maria Barton, CSJ, 89, died Thursday, January 3, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. Sister Christine had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 63 years.

 Sister Christine Maria, the former Mary Ethel Barton, was born September 11, 1923, in Albany, NY, daughter of the late Harry and Anna McGrath Barton. After graduating from Cathedral Academy, Albany, Sister Christine completed secretarial studies at The Mildred Elley School in Albany and worked for the U. S. War Department. In 1944, she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Women’s Reserves (SPARS) and was honorably discharged as a Yeoman First Class. After her military service, Sister Christine attended The College of Saint Rose on the G.I. Bill of Rights. On March 19, 1950, Sister Christine Maria entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph and professed final vows August 15, 1957. She completed a bachelor’s degree from The College of Saint Rose and a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii. For 30 years, Sister Christine taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses and in Kailua and Kahului, Hawaii. In addition, she served in clerical positions at The College of Saint Rose, the Dominican Retreat House, St. Casimir’s School and St. Joseph’s Provincial House.
 
Sister Christine Maria was a gracious, lovely woman. The same determination and integrity which led her to become a member of the U.S. Coast Guard marked her life as a Sister of St. Joseph. A stellar example of hospitality and dedication, Sister Christine’s life was characterized by a deep commitment to prayer, service and seeking God in all things. Her faith and hope enabled her to face her own long road home with patience and valor. We will miss Sister Christine Maria dearly, and the memory of her vitality and generosity of spirit will remain with us well into the future.
 
Sister Christine Maria is survived by her brother, Daniel Barton; her very special cousins: Kathleen and Roger Shearer, Suzanne and Fred Denefrio, Mary Beth and John Dollard, and William McGrath, and their families; her nieces: Rebecca Shea, Donna Berzal and Holly Craig, and their families; many dear friends; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Christine was predeceased by her beloved “Auntie,” Mary McGrath Meligdis; her sisters, Shirley Barton and Lois Goldman; her brother, Richard Barton; and many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
 
Sister Christine Maria’s funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, January 8, in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
