Sister Mary Brigada Lombardi, CSJ

Sister Mary Brigada Lombardi, CSJ, 88, died Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 61 years.

Sister Mary Brigada, the former Margaret Lombardi, was born September 27, 1924 in Merrickville, NY, daughter of the late John and Anna Breglia Lombardi. After graduating from Hancock Central School, Sister Mary Brigada attended the Marinello Beauty School in Albany and worked as a licensed beautician in Binghamton and Penn Yan. On August 15, 1951 Sister Mary Brigada entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph and professed final vows on August 15, 1958. She received a bachelor's degree from The College of Saint Rose and spent the first 16 years of her religious life teaching in elementary schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. In 1969, Sister Mary Brigada began her ministry at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, where she served for 22 years as a staff member in the Business Office, clerk/typist and accounts-payable supervisor. In addition, Sister Mary Brigada served the Albany Diocese as secretary to the co-vicar for religious and as account clerk in the Propagation of the Faith Office and worked as a bookkeeper at St. Anthony’s Friary in Rensselaer.
Sister Mary Brigada was a woman of many talents, and she shared her gifts generously in each of her ministries. No matter the task in the classroom, the hospital, the office or the chapel, she willingly saw that undertaking to completion with care and precision. Sister Mary Brigada’s thoughtfulness and loving concern endeared her to family, friends and co-workers alike. Her devotedness ran deep, and her commitment to her faith and her religious community was marked by goodness and fidelity. Sister Mary Brigada entered wholeheartedly into life’s challenges, and she leaves us a legacy of gentle grace, selfless service and unswerving dedication.
Sister Mary Brigada is survived by her beloved brothers, John and Edward Lombardi; by several dear nieces and nephews and their families, with special mention of her niece, Patricia Butts, with whom Sister Mary Brigada spent many wonderful vacations; by many friends and colleagues, including her faithful friend, Rev. Paul Tartaglia; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Mary Brigada was predeceased by her brothers: Charles, Tony, Paul and Herbert; by her sisters: Carmella McNulty, Nancy D'Imperio and Madaline Butts; and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Mary Brigada's funeral Liturgy was held Monday, November 12, 2012, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
