Sister Jane Mary Dardis, CSJ, 83, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 64 years.
Sister Jane Mary was born on September 1, 1928 in Syracuse, NY, daughter of the late Arthur and Anne Collins Dardis. After graduating from St. Patrick’s High School in Syracuse, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, on March 19, 1948, and professed final vows on August 15, 1953. Sister Jane Mary received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. She taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses for nearly 30 years and then began her career in parish ministry where she served at St. Alphonsus Parish in Tupper Lake and St. Peter’s Parish in Rome. In addition, Sister Jane Mary was a staff member in the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and a receptionist and pastoral-care coordinator at St. Joseph’s Provincial House.
Sister Jane Mary was a lovely, gracious woman, proud of her faith and her Irish heritage, solidly rooted in St. Patrick’s Parish in Syracuse. As a dedicated teacher, Sister Jane Mary brought to the classroom clarity of instruction, respect for the individuality of each student and high expectations. As a pastoral minister, she displayed a comforting presence, a listening ear and sound advice. Sister Jane Mary’s life of prayer, her love of community and her zeal in doing God’s work prepared her well for her final homecoming.
Sister Jane Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families; by many cousins and friends; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, William and John Dardis; by one sister, Mary Banach; and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Jane Mary’s funeral Liturgy was held on Monday, February 20, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
