Sister Rose Therese Zaloom, CSJ

Sister Rose Therese Zaloom, CSJ, 84, died Friday, July 1, 2011, in St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 66 years. 

Sister Rose Therese, the former Florence Anne Zaloom, was born on September 2, 1926, in Utica, NY, daughter of the later George and Manera (Mary) Shahoud Zaloom. After graduating from St. Francis De Sales High School, Sister Rose entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 3, 1945 and professed final vows on August 15, 1951. She received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in elementary education, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 45 years, Sister Rose taught elementary grades in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses and in Encino, CA. For the last 18 years of her life as a Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Rose served in the Business Office at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY.
Sister Rose Therese was a gentle woman of deep faith, fervent prayer and dedicated service. An exceptional teacher and mentor with a keen sense of community, an engaging smile and a delightful sense of humor, she enjoyed nothing more than visiting with dear friends and a good game of cards. Her work was characterized by integrity and precision, and her heart was marked with gratitude. Sister Rose leaves us a lasting legacy of the beauty of a life lived in service to others.
Sister Rose Therese is survived by her nieces, Florence Vohs, Christine Dipold and Georgette Stadler; her nephew, Michael Fisher; her grandnieces, Angela Ognibene and Sara Stadler; her cousins, Barbara Blackwell, Joseph Zaloom and Robert Zaloom; many dear friends; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Rose was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn; her brothers, Norman and Edward; and many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph..
Sister Rose Therese’s funeral Liturgy was held on Tuesday, July 5, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
