Sister Mary Catherine Marrone, CSJ (Sister John Anthony)


Sister Mary Catherine Marrone, CSJ (Sister John Anthony), 73, died Saturday, June 11, 2011 at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham, NY. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 54 years.

Sister Mary Catherine was born in Rome, NY, on August 28, 1937, daughter of the late Louis and Antoinette Todora Marrone. She graduated from St. Aloysius Academy, entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1957, and professed final vows on August 6, 1964. Sister Mary Catherine received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from The College of Saint Rose and a master's degree in education from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. For 22 years, she taught and served as principal in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses; for 14 years she served in the education ministry in Honolulu, Waipahu and Kailua, Hawaii. In addition, Sister Mary Catherine was a pastoral associate in St. Peter's Parish, Rome, NY.
 
Sister Mary Catherine loved life, cherished family and friends and trusted in God for her strength in the presence of a severe and lengthy illness. She was a dedicated teacher and administrator, a compassionate parish minister, a faithful friend and a committed Sister of St. Joseph. An avid sports fan, Sister Mary Catherine was a longtime and enthusiastic supporter of the New York Yankees and Syracuse University basketball. Her passion in life, however, centered around her relationship with God and with the many persons she treasured on her life’s journey. Sister Mary Catherine made a difference in the world and will hold a special place in our hearts for years to come.
 
Sister Mary Catherine is survived by an aunt, Rose Robenski of Hinckley, NY; a nephew, Albert Marrone of Utica; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Eaton of Utica; several cousins, including Sam and Vickey Todora of Rome, and Judy and Ronald Todora of Liverpool; many dear friends with special mention of Kathleen Fiorillo of Albany and Lisa Pimpinella of Rome; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Mary Catherine was predeceased by her brother, Albert Marrone; and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
 
Sister Mary Catherine's Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, June 15, in the chapel of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Donations in Sister Mary Catherine's name may be made to the Development Office, Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110.
