Sister Ann Marie O’Connor, CSJ, (Sister Helen Denis), 84, died Saturday, January 22, 2011, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 65 years.

Sister Ann Marie was born on November 21, 1926 in Utica, NY, daughter of the late Pierce Dennis and Helen Morgan O’Connor. After graduating from Utica Free Academy, Sister Ann Marie entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on August 15, 1946, and professed final vows on August 15, 1951. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in elementary education, both from The College of Saint Rose, and later pursued studies in gerontology. For 32 years, Sister Ann Marie taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, and for 11 years, she served the Sisters of St. Joseph as assistant superior and then superior of the retired and infirm sisters at St. Joseph’s Provincial House. At the completion of her term as superior, Sister Ann Marie was a pastoral-care associate at Villa Mary Immaculate in Albany and later devoted herself to community in-service at St. Joseph’s Provincial House.

Sister Ann Marie was a kind, gracious and hospitable woman, always ready with a smile and a thoughtful comment. As a teacher, she was gentle and affirming, blessed with a gift for recognizing each student’s strengths and potential for growth. As superior to senior sisters and as a pastoral-care associate, she ministered with attentive and compassionate care and listening. With her deep faith in God, her delightful Irish wit and her genuine interest in people, Sister Ann Marie brought joy to her family, her friends and her religious community. She leaves a splendid legacy of hope, integrity and service, and she will be remembered with love.
