Sister Joseph Mary O'Hagan, CSJ

Sister Joseph Mary O’Hagan, CSJ, 82, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Joseph had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 61 years.

Sister Joseph Mary, the former Anne Wilhelmina O’Hagan, was born in Albany, NY, on October 25, 1928, daughter of the late Charles and Josephine Weber O’Hagan. Sister Joseph graduated from St. Ann’s Academy, Albany, entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on August 15, 1950, and professed final vows on August 15, 1957. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 58 years, Sister Joseph Mary taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. Previous to her final illness, she was a teacher in the Learning Center at the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany.
Sister Joseph Mary was an excellent primary teacher who endeared herself to the children and their parents. Considerate, kind and thoughtful, she had a special eye for those students who found learning difficult. She was a prayerful woman who embodied the gift of hospitality and who responded wholeheartedly to her vocation as a Sister of St. Joseph. In her community life, Sister Joseph Mary was a gentle, quiet presence who strove to temper serious matters with a simple hope and trust that all would be well. She leaves behind a rich legacy of a life of goodness, service and respect for all persons.
Sister Joseph Mary is survived by her beloved sisters: Sister Vincent Marie O'Hagan of Latham, Marjorie O’Hagan of Albany, and Jean O’Hagan of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; by her nieces and nephews and their families; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph. In addition to her parents, Sister Joseph Mary was predeceased by her dear sister, Theresa Yezzi, and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Joseph Mary’s funeral Liturgy was held Monday, January 24, 2011, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Contributions in Sister Joseph Mary’s memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110.
