Sister Elizabeth Mary Paciello, CSJ

Sister Elizabeth Mary Paciello, CSJ, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Utica, NY. Sister Elizabeth had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 62 years.

Sister Elizabeth, the former Doreen Joyce Paciello, was born in Utica, NY, daughter of the late Louis and Mary Brown Paciello. After graduating from St. Francis De Sales High School, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1948, and professed final vows on August 15, 1953. Sister Elizabeth received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in elementary education, both from The College of Saint Rose, and pursued studies in ministry and spiritual counseling at Saint Rose and St. Joseph’s Center in Valatie, NY. Sister Elizabeth served in the education ministry for 37 years as teacher and principal in various schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses. In addition, she served with her twin sister, Sister Lois Mary, for 13 years at St. Joseph’s/St. Mary’s Parish in Boonville, NY, as director of religious education and parish minister. For the past 11 years until the time of her death, Sister Elizabeth was a parish minister at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica, NY.
Sister Elizabeth Mary was a faith-filled woman, devoted to God and motivated by the Gospel. She had a special gift of seeing the face of God in the people she met each day, and her example encouraged others to do the same. Sister Elizabeth Mary leaves a lasting legacy of a life marked by the love, simplicity and humility of the Gospel.
Sister Elizabeth Mary is survived by three sisters: Marie Mascaro, Lillian Postiglione and her twin sister, Sister Lois Mary, all of Utica, NY; a loving aunt, Rose Paciello; several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Elizabeth Mary’s funeral Liturgy was held Friday, December 31, in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica, NY. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Contributions in Sister Elizabeth Mary’s memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110 or to the ministries of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
