In Remembrance

Sister Joseph Ann Murphy, CSJ

Sister Joseph Ann Murphy, CSJ, 83, died Saturday, December 4, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, NY. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 62 years.

Sister Joseph Ann, the former Kathryn Anne Murphy, was born on September 24, 1927 in Syracuse, NY, the only child the late of Garrett and Ann Ryan Murphy. She graduated from Skaneateles High School in 1945 and attended The College of Saint Rose. On March 19, 1948, Sister Joseph entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph and professed final vows on August 15, 1953. Sister Joseph received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The College of Saint Rose and taught for 47 years in schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses, including the following: St. James School, Albany; St. Pius X School, Loudonville; St. Luke’s School, Schenectady; and Blessed Sacrament School, St. Lucy’s School and St. Anthony’s School, all in Syracuse. After Sister Joseph’s retirement from teaching, she served for many years as an in-service volunteer at St. Joseph’s Provincial House.

Sister Joseph Ann was a generous, thoughtful woman in the truest sense of the words. Deeply centered in God and very appreciative of others, she was a woman who gave without measure and expected nothing in return. A first-grade teacher for nearly five decades, Sister Joseph had a special love for young children and provided them with an excellent foundation for their school years. In the end, Sister Joseph died as she had lived—peacefully and simply with the blessed assurance of eternal life. She will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle nature and spirit of gratitude which permeated her every action.

Sister Joseph Ann is survived by her cousins: Richard Gates of Elizabethtown, PA; Richard and Margaret Kline of Glendale, AZ; Sisters Elizabeth Jean Allard and Annette Allard of Latham, NY; Sister Theresa Brown of Syracuse; many other cousins and friends; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her aunt, Sister Anna Regina Ryan, and many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Sister Joseph Ann’s funeral Liturgy was held Friday, December 10, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Contributions in Sister Joseph Ann’s memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110.
