Sister Adelina, the former Lucille Lillian St. Hilaire, was born March 2, 1922, in Hoosick Falls, NY, daughter of the late Joseph and Yvonne Dumouchel St. Hilaire. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in Hoosick Falls, Sister Adelina worked briefly at Easy Mill Manufacturing Company, entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1941, and professed final vows on August 15, 1946. Sister Adelina received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. In addition, she pursued studies in language arts and literacy and participated in many Elderhostel experiences. For 34 years, Sister Adelina served as teacher and principal in Catholic schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses and in Honolulu, HI. In 1984, after caring for her mother for seven years, Sister Adelina began a new ministry in social services. In that capacity, she served in Catholic Charities as coordinator of Catholic Family and Community Services in Herkimer County; director of Retired Senior Volunteer Services in Ilion; family counselor with Catholic Family and Community Services in Columbia County; coordinator of parish-outreach emergency assistance in Hudson; and assistant coordinator of outreach emergency in Columbia-Green Counties. For the last decade of her life, Sister Adelina was director of Central Supply and coordinator of the In-and-Out Shop at St. Joseph’s Provincial House.
Sister Adelina was an excellent educator and a dedicated advocate for the poor. Blessed with a deep sense of compassion for all suffering persons, Sister Adelina used her gifts to bring hope and reconciliation to those she met. Her indefatigable energy, fierce determination and characteristic ingenuity combined to make Sister Adelina a wonderful Sister of St. Joseph and an effective minister of the Gospel. She leaves to us a legacy of a heart rooted in wholehearted commitment and service.
Sister Adelina is survived by her beloved family: her brothers, Donald and Raymond (Dale) St. Hilaire, both of Hoosick Falls; many nieces, nephews, friends and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Adelina was predeceased by her sisters: Sister Yvonne (Velma) St. Hilaire, Leona Turner, Valeda Grainy and Alice Lozo; her brothers, William and Harvey St. Hilaire; and many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
