Sister Catherine Paul Theiss, CSJ

Sister Catherine Paul Theiss, CSJ, 61, died Thursday, March 29, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Catherine Paul had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 41 years and was a member of the community of sisters at The Spiritual Center, Windsor, NY.

Sister Catherine Paul, the former Alicia Anne Theiss, was born on July 18, 1945, in Auburn, NY, daughter of the late Francis and Alice Carey Mitchell Theiss. After graduating from St. John the BaptistAcademy, Sister Catherine attended Powelson Business Institute and worked for Post Standard Corporation in Syracuse. On August 6, 1966, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Catherine received a bachelor’s degree in social studies from The College of Saint Rose, Albany, and a master’s degree in religious studies from LaSalleUniversity, Philadelphia; in addition, she received certification in religious education from the Diocese of Rochester. In 2003, Sister Catherine Paul graduated from the Finger Lakes School of Massage in Ithaca.
During Sister Catherine Paul’s 41 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, she taught in elementary and high schools in Troy, Syracuse, Cohoes and Binghamton, and served in parish ministry and religious education in Oswego, ElmiraHeights and Watkins Glen. At the time of her death, she was a massage therapist at Spirit Centered Body Works, Johnson City, and at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham.
Sister Catherine Paul possessed an unusual combination of deep spiritual values, solid intellectual competence and strong pastoral skills. As an enthusiastic educator, she gave clear examples of ways to relate religious instruction and Scripture to one’s life experience. As a parish minister, she encouraged parishioners to build compassionate communities and to engage more actively in the mission of the Church. As a massage therapist, she shared her gift of nurturing touch as she tuned in spiritually and physically with her clients. While Sister Catherine anticipated death, she maintained a spirit of hope and brought joy to all around her.
Sister Catherine Paul is survived by her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Maura and Bill Post of Horseheads, NY; by her niece, Laurie; by her nephews, Christopher, Michael and Richard and their families; by the sisters at The Spiritual Center, Windsor, NY; by many dear friends and by the Sisters of St. Joseph. In addition to her parents, Sister Catherine Paul was predeceased by her dearly loved brother, Paul; her faithful friend, Rev. David Bonin; and many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Catherine Paul’s funeral Liturgy was held Monday, April 2, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of VirginsCemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
