Sister Matilda Anne, christened Anna Mae Riley, was born in Syracuse, NY, on June 13, 1919, daughter of the late Frank and Matilda Smith Riley. After graduating from St. Vincent de Paul High School, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1937 and professed final vows on August 15, 1942. Sister Matilda taught in elementary and secondary schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses, including 19 years at St. Anthony’s School, Syracuse. In addition, Sister Matilda volunteered at Community General Hospital and Bishop Ludden Apartments, both in Syracuse.

Sister Matilda Anne was an excellent teacher and a strong supporter of Catholic education on all levels. She strove to get the very best from her students who, in turn, greatly admired and respected her. Sister Matilda was devoted to her family, and they were a source of deep joy to her. A sports enthusiast, she was an avid Yankees fan who generously extended her loyalties to include Syracuse University basketball! Paramount in Sister Matilda Anne’s life was her faith, manifested most clearly through her devotion to Mary and the rosary. Sister Matilda Anne was a strong woman both in personality and stature, and she faced the long, debilitating effects of ALS with remarkable grace and courage.

Sister Matilda Anne is survived by her beloved sister, Imogene Peiffer of Syracuse; by her faithful nieces: Carol (Peter) O’Mara of Camillus; Patricia Cook of Syracuse; and Mary (Michael) Larkin of Rochester; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition, to her parents, Sister Matilda was predeceased by her brother, Francis, and by several friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
