Sister Mary Ernesta Flynn, CSJ

Sister Mary Ernesta Flynn, CSJ, 84, died Saturday, April 7, 2007, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Mary Ernesta had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 67 years.

Sister Mary Ernesta, the former Rita Monica Flynn, was born in Buskirk, NY, May 3, 1922, daughter of the late Willard and Elizabeth Conway Flynn. After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls, Sister Ernesta entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1940. She received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English, both from The College of Saint Rose. For over 45 years, Sister Ernesta taught and served as administrator in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including 8 years in St. Mary’s School, Glens Falls, and 11 years at St. Mary’s School, Hoosick Falls. In addition, Sister Ernesta served the Sisters of St. Joseph as superior in several local communities.

Sister Mary Ernesta was a tremendous community woman and a beloved superior. As a gifted and competent educator, she was an excellent teacher and administrator alike. Slow to anger and quick to praise, Sister Ernesta was the epitome of kindness and inspiration. In her own quiet and unassuming way, she was there for whoever needed her or whatever the need might be. In addition to her love of community, Sister Mary Ernesta had a deep devotion to her family and spoke often and lovingly of her brother and her sisters and their families; she shared a special bond of kinship with her beloved sister, Sister Regina Marie. Sister Ernesta’s deep faith, quick mind and gentle disposition combined to form the dedicated woman who was known and loved by so many.

Sister Mary Ernesta is survived by her beloved sister, Sister Regina Marie Flynn, CSJ; several nieces, nephews and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four sisters: Catherine Flynn, Mary Flynn Wyatt, Helen Flynn Levandowski and Margaret Flynn Walsh; one brother, Willard Flynn; and several dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Sister Mary Ernesta’s funeral Liturgy was celebrated by her nephew, Rev. James Walsh, on Wednesday, April 11, in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
