Sister Yvonne St. Hilaire, CSJ

Sister Yvonne St. Hilaire, CSJ, 88, died Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Yvonne had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 70 years.

 Sister Yvonne, the former Velma Alma St. Hilaire, was born in Hoosick Falls, NY, on November 20, 1919, daughter of the late Joseph and Yvonne Dumouchel St. Hilaire. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School, HoosickFalls, and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, on March 19, 1938. Sister Yvonne received a bachelor’s degree in French from The College of Saint Rose and taught elementary grades and French and English in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. In addition, she served in St. Mary’s Home, Binghamton; St. Joseph’s Home, Troy; performed in-service work at St. Joseph’s Seminary and St. Joseph’s Provincial House and volunteered at Samaritan Hospital and Our Lady of Hope Residence.
Sister Yvonne was a devoted teacher who loved young children. A woman of deep faith, she was a hard worker with a generous spirit and a giving heart. Sister Yvonne dedicated her best effort at whatever task she undertook and was grateful for her many blessings. She frequently expressed her heart’s joy through beautiful singing in her rich alto voice. During her last days, Sister Yvonne truly looked forward to her final homecoming.
Sister Yvonne is survived by her beloved sister, Sister Adelina St. Hilaire, CSJ, of Latham; her brothers, Donald and Raymond St. Hilaire, both of Hoosick Falls; many nieces, nephews, friends and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Yvonne was predeceased by her sisters, Leona, Valeda and Alice; her brothers, William and Harvey; and many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Yvonne’s funeral Liturgy was held Monday, January 14, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of VirginsCemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
