Sister Catherine Marie Giglio, CSJ


Sister Catherine Marie Giglio, CSJ, 70, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at St. John the Evangelist Convent, New Hartford, NY. Sister Catherine had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 51 years.

 Sister Catherine Marie, the former Marlene Giglio, was born in Utica, NY on June 26, 1937, daughter of the late Patrick and Helen Atwell Giglio. She graduated from St. Francis de SalesHigh School and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on August 15, 1957. Sister Catherine completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at The College of Saint Rose and taught for 47 years in elementary schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. In addition, she served as director of social-justice ministry for the AlbanyProvince of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. At the time of her death, Sister Catherine Marie was on the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes School in Utica.
 
Throughout her life, Sister Catherine inspired many with her humble, gentle nature, her calm, caring attitude and her deep commitment to faith. Her contagious smile and her joy of life complemented her passion for justice and her love for the ministry of education. Sister Catherine continued to inspire those around her as she faced pain, sickness and death with courage and grace.
 
Sister Catherine Marie is survived by her beloved family, including her brothers: John (Faith); William; Robert (Lorraine); and Nicholas (Sandy) Giglio; her sisters: Jane Puleo; Frances (William) Lydle; Adrienne Giglio; Cathy (Anthony) Giruzzi; Lisa (Jack) Milos, and by many nieces, nephews and their families. In addition, Sister Catherine is survived by her local religious community at St. John the Evangelist Convent, New Hartford: Sisters Martha Vincent Larkin and Rose Benedict Troy; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Catherine was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Helen, and many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
 
Sister Catherine Marie’s funeral Mass was held on Thursday, March 6 the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes Utica. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of VirginsCemetery at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham.
