Sister Anne Sheridan, CSJ (Sister Anne Christopher), 70, died Saturday, October 17, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Anne had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 52 years.

Sister Anne, the former Margaret Jeanne Sheridan, was born in Albany, NY, daughter of the late Walter and Margaret Walsh Sheridan. She graduated from Cathedral Academy, Albany, in 1956; entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1957; and professed final vows on August 6, 1964. Sister Anne received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from The College of Saint Rose, a master’s degree in mathematics from The University of Notre Dame, and a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Emmanuel College. Sister Anne taught mathematics and science in secondary schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including Keveny Academy, Cohoes; Catholic Central High School, Troy; St. John the Baptist High School and St. Lucy’s School, Syracuse; and Rome Catholic High School. In addition, she was principal of St. Patrick’s High School, Syracuse. In 1985, after pursuing studies in clinical pastoral education and spiritual direction, Sister Anne served as a spiritual director at St. Stephen’s Priory, Dover, MA; as a counselor at Counseling for Laity, Albany; and as a parish life director at St. Patrick’s Church, Cambridge, NY. Sister Anne also was a regional superior and director of personnel for the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Blessed with a brilliant mind and clarity of thought, Sister Anne’s intelligence was matched only by her thoughtful, compassionate nature and her encouraging, affirming spirit. She was a sensitive listener, a supportive friend, and an utterly devoted Sister of St. Joseph. Sister Anne faced the long days of her final illness with immense courage and grace, characterized by the same pervading gentleness that marked her life. In health and in sickness, Sister Anne touched the lives of many with her love, and she will be deeply missed.

Sister Anne is survived by her beloved family: her brothers, Walter and Chris; her sister, Patricia Falzano; their families; many dear friends; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her dear aunt, Teresa Walsh, and many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
