Sister Dolores Stack, CSJ

Sister Dolores Stack, CSJ, (Sister Mary Bernard), 76, died Wednesday evening, March 12, 2008, at Francis House, Syracuse. Sister Dolores had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 56 years.

Sister Dolores was born July 13, 1931, in Syracuse, daughter of the late William and Lillian McNamara Stack. She graduated from Eastwood High School and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on February 11, 1952. At the beginning of her religious life, Sister Dolores did catechetical work in Endicott and Oswego. In addition, she cared for the senior sisters at St. Joseph’s Convent in Troy. After working for eight years at The College of Saint Rose, Albany, Sister Dolores began working in the area of social services with a particular emphasis on meeting the needs of the elderly and the poor. For seven years, she ministered to the people of St. Lucy’s Parish in Syracuse and then began a 29-year career serving the elderly at Loretto Geriatric Center, first as an aide and then as a licensed practical nurse. Sister Dolores’ last ministry was at Greenpoint Keepsake Village at the Hearth in Syracuse.

Sister Dolores was a competent, hard-working and practical woman, always willing to be of service. Her deep belief in God’s sustaining care and her self-sacrificing nature led Sister Dolores to be dedicated and generous in her ministry with the elderly. Her creativity added to a beautiful holiday atmosphere in the various convents in which she lived. Sister Dolores will be remembered lovingly by family, friends and those who received her care.

Sister Dolores is survived by her beloved sisters, Veronica Theoret of Alexandria Bay, and Mary Margaret Aversa of Syracuse; her local community at Blessed Sacrament Convent, Syracuse: Sisters Catherine Doyle, Kathleen Eiffe, Marionella Graham and Maureen Murphy; many friends; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Dolores was predeceased by her beloved sister, Anne, and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Sister Dolores’ funeral Liturgy was held March 15 at St. Daniel’s Church, 3004 Court Street, Syracuse. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham.
