Sister Irene Kruse, CSJ (Sister John Irene)

Sister Irene Kruse, CSJ (Sister John Irene), 76, died Thursday, August 13, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Troy. Sister Irene had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 52 years.

Sister Irene was born in Albany on October 15, 1932, daughter of the late John W. and Irene Clas Kruse. She graduated from Cathedral Academy and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1957. Sister Irene received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. She taught for 40 years in elementary schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including ten years at Immaculate Conception School in Schenectady and nearly ten years at St. Brigid’s Regional Catholic School in Watervliet. In addition, she was principal of St. Peter’s School, Troy. At the time of her death, Sister Irene served as a secretary at the Chancery Office of the Albany Diocese.
Sister Irene was blessed with an attitude of deep reverence and respect for all of God’s creation. She loved to celebrate the beauty and grandeur of nature, especially the panoramic vista from a snow-capped mountain peak. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Sister Irene had scaled 26 of the 46 Adirondack peaks, reveling in the peace of God’s majestic mountain glories. During her many years of teaching science to middle-school children, Sister Irene instilled in her students an appreciation of the integrity, interconnectedness and mystery in the web of life. She was a 21st-century Renaissance woman who expressed her broad interests through her writings, musings and skilled craftsmanship. A treasured sister and aunt, a faithful friend and a devoted Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Irene will be greatly missed.
Sister Irene is survived by three beloved sisters: Helene Kruse of Albany; Bernadette (John) Williamson of Loudonville; and Mary (Stanley) Kozielski of Albany; one cherished nephew, Andy Williamson of Loudonville; an aunt, Gloria Salisbury of North Greenbush; an uncle, Tom Clas of Schenectady; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John, and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Irene’s funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, August 17, in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
