Sister Regina Marie Flynn, CSJ
Sister Regina Marie Flynn, CSJ, 89, died Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Regina Marie celebrated her 70th anniversary as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet in March 2009.
Sister Regina Marie was born in Buskirk, NY, on September 7, 1919, daughter of the late Willard and Elizabeth Conway Flynn. After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls, Sister Regina entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1939 and professed final vows on August 15, 1944. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from The College of Saint Rose. For 47 years, Sister Regina taught and served in catechetical work in schools and parishes in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including ten years at St. John the Evangelist School in Syracuse and twelve years at St. Mary’s School, Hoosick Falls, where she also served as principal. In addition, Sister Regina Marie served the Sisters of St. Joseph for several years as a driver.
Sister Regina Marie was a gracious, kind woman, with a unique passion and enthusiasm for her life as a Sister of St. Joseph. Whether in the classroom or in catechetical ministry, Sister Regina respected and reverenced the people whom she served. She was a healthy blend of discipline and compassion in the workplace and a trusted, faithful presence in community life where her inner peace and love of God were reflected in all she did. Sister Regina Marie dealt with her recurring illness with patience and fortitude and remained devoted to her faith, her family and her friends.
Sister Regina Marie is survived by several nieces, nephews and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by five sisters: Catherine Flynn, Mary Wyatt, Helen Levandowski, Margaret Walsh and Sister Mary Ernesta Flynn, CSJ; one brother, Willard Flynn; and several dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Regina Marie’s funeral Liturgy was celebrated by her nephew, Rev. James Walsh, on Saturday, July 18, 2009, in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
