Sister Stephen Maria Dixon, CSJ, 84, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Stephen Maria had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 61 years.

Sister Stephen Maria was born Elizabeth Lucy Dixon on July 29, 1923, in Schenectady, NY, daughter of the late Stephen and Millie M. Berryann Dixon. After graduating from St. Columba’s High School in Schenectady, Sister Stephen worked for General Electric for four years.  On March 19, 1947, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and professed final vows on August 15, 1952.  Sister Stephen received a bachelor's degree in biology from The College of Saint Rose and was a licensed radiologic technologist at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam. While serving at St. Mary's Hospital for 53 years, Sister Stephen was an x-ray technician, chief technician and supervisor of the imaging department; in her later years, she was a receptionist and clerk at the hospital.

Along with her beloved friend, Sister Anthony Marie Leary, Sister Stephen Maria was an icon at St. Mary’s Hospital and in the Amsterdam area. She was recognized for her keen intellect and powers of observation in the medical-imaging field. There is no doubt that Sister Stephen Maria will always be a legend in the field of radiology at St. Mary’s Hospital as she inspired others to recognize the values of excellence, integrity and compassion. In addition, her beautiful singing voice and talent in illustration added the perfect touch to many celebrations. In her final illness, Sister Stephen’s smile radiated the kindness, gentleness and courage that marked her life of faith.

Sister Stephen Maria is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families; by many friends and colleagues, including her treasured friend, Sister Anthony Marie Leary; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  She was predeceased by three brothers: James, George and Robert Dixon; by one sister, Mary Jeanette Riley; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
