Sister Linda Jean Dowling, CSJ
Sister Linda Jean Dowling, CSJ, 60, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Linda had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 42 years.
Sister Linda Jean was born in Troy, NY, daughter of the late John L. and Marian Elshoug Dowling. After graduating from Keveny Memorial Academy in Cohoes, Sister Linda entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on August 12, 1967, and professed final vows on August 15, 1973. Sister Linda received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from SUNY at Oswego and a master’s degree in special education from The College of Saint Rose. For nearly 35 years, Sister Linda taught at schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses, including 13 years at St. Marie’s School and Cohoes Consolidated Catholic School. Her most recent teaching assignments were St. Mary’s School, Ballston Spa, and Our Lady of Victory School, Troy.
Thoughtful, gracious and generous by nature, Sister Linda was uniquely beautiful inside and out. She was a remarkable educator who taught not only with the mind but also with the heart. From the moment Sister Linda would kneel down to meet each child at eye level, the students were inspired, encouraged and motivated by her. In her life as a Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Linda was a trusted presence, and her gentle, compassionate spirit made her well respected and deeply loved. Nurtured by her prayer life and surrounded by her beloved family and friends, Sister Linda was able to face her final illness with the same faith, courage and tenacity that characterized her life.
Sister Linda Jean is survived by her dearly loved brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Linda Dowling of Ballston Lake; her beloved nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins; many wonderful friends and the Sisters of St. Joseph. In addition to her parents, Sister Linda was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Heidi Dowling; and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Linda Jean’s funeral Liturgy was held on Monday, June 8, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
