Sister Margaret Mary Grewen, CSJ, 94, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House in Latham. Sister Margaret Mary had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 72 years.
Sister Margaret Mary was born in Johnstown, NY, on April 6, 1914, daughter of the late John and Mary Meagher Grewen. After graduating from JohnstownHigh School, Sister Margaret Mary entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1936. She completed her undergraduate studies in at The College of Saint Rose and her graduate studies at Catholic University of America and the University of Montreal. For nearly 40 years, Sister Margaret Mary taught French in various schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses. In addition, she served as a parish minister in Syracuse, Utica and Amsterdam.
Sister Margaret Mary was a gifted educator and a compassionate parish minister with a verve and passion for learning and a philosophy of living that inspired and encouraged those around her. A conversationalist with an abiding interest in many and varied topics, Sister Margaret was also a spellbinding storyteller. She was a cherished daughter, sister, aunt and friend and the last surviving sibling of a proud clan of Grewens.
Sister Margaret Mary is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the Sisters of St. Joseph. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers: John, Rev. Robert, Richard and Fred; two sisters: Sister Rosaire and Gertrude, and many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Margaret Mary’s funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, July 7 in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of VirginsCemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
