Sister Jane Gossin, CSJ (Sister Marie Fortunata)
Sister Jane Gossin, CSJ, (Sister Marie Fortunata), 89, died, Sunday, March 1, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Jane had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 70 years.
Sister Jane was born January 3, 1920, in Utica, NY, daughter of the late Francis and Margaret Collins Gossin. She graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Utica, entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, on March 19, 1939, and professed final vows on August 15, 1944. Sister Jane received a bachelor’s degree in social studies and a master’s degree in elementary education, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 55 years, Sister Jane taught in schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including St. Francis de Sales School, Herkimer; St. Pius X School (first principal), Loudonville; St. Ann’s School, Albany; St. Patrick’s School, Binghamton; and St. Patrick’s School (principal), Syracuse. Prior to her retirement, Sister Jane served for 24 years as principal of St. Luke’s School, Schenectady. In addition, she served the Sisters of St. Joseph in many leadership positions, including superior of St. Joseph’s Provincial House.
Sister Jane was a gifted and passionate educator, committed to creating an atmosphere dedicated to the needs of each student and to a collaborative spirit among faculty, staff and parents. A dynamic, empathetic leader, she used her vision and curriculum savvy to transform a school building into a place of hope where children could learn and flourish. Sister Jane leaves a legacy of family loyalty and love to her nieces and nephews whose visits brought her such joy. To her Sisters of St. Joseph and her many friends, she will long be remembered for her generous heart, her characteristic laugh, her ever present enthusiasm for life and her deep faith.
Sister Jane is survived by several beloved nieces and nephews and their families, including Thomas (Jean) Gossin, Janice (John) Freiberger, Frank (Ann) Mittin, Michael (Susan) Gossin, William Gossin, Meg (John) Kelly; many wonderful friends and colleagues; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Jane was predeceased by her dearly loved brothers and sisters: Francis W. Gossin, Margaret Farrell, Mary Alice Mittin and John B. Gossin; and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Jane’s funeral Liturgy was held Friday, March 6, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
