Sister Rose Marie Chamberland, CSJ


Sister Rose Marie Chamberland, CSJ, (Sister Margaret Earl), 71, died Monday, September 15 at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Sister Rose Marie had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 52 years.

 Sister Rose Marie was born in Schenectady on February 11, 1937, daughter of the late Earl Chamberland and Antoinette Hebert Chamberland Gayne. After graduating from the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on March 19, 1956. Sister Rose Marie received a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose. For over 50 years, she taught in elementary schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses, including St. Bernard’s, Cohoes; St. Paul’s, Mechanicville; St. Peter’s, Saratoga; Cathedral, Albany; St. Peter’s, St. Joseph’s, Sacred Heart, St. Francis and CCHS Junior High, Troy; St. Mary’s, Little Falls; and St. Ambrose, Latham.
 
Sister Rose Marie was a kind, generous and caring woman. A witty jokester and a gregarious conversationalist with a ready smile and a great sense of fun, Sister Rose Marie treasured time spent with her many family members and friends. She was a dedicated, challenging teacher who expected the best from her students and was willing to go the extra mile for them, especially in conveying lessons of faith and hope.
 
Sister Rose Marie is survived by her family who were very dear to her: her brother, George; her sisters, Arlene Chamberland, Lorraine Conahan and Therese Bergeron; her nieces and nephews and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Rose Marie was predeceased by her brothers, Earl and Howard; by her sister, Laurent; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
 
Sister Rose Marie’s funeral Liturgy was held on Wednesday, September 17, from the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Interment was in Our Lady Queen of VirginsCemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
