Sister Raphael Smith, CSJ
Sister Raphael was born Jean Elizabeth Smith on February 24, 1923 in Albany, New York to the late Stephen and Elizabeth Bastian Smith. Raised in Albany, she completed grammar school and high school at CathedralAcademy. In 1941, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, made her first profession of vows in 1944 and her final vows in 1947. Sister Raphael received a bachelor’s degree in commerce from The College of Saint Rose and a master’s degree in business education from Catholic University of America.
During her years as a Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Raphael taught in the elementary grades and business in various high schools in the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses, including the following: St. Peter’s School, Rome; St. Mary’s Home, Binghamton; St. Francis de Sales School, Utica; St. Patrick’s School, Binghamton; St. Mary’s Academy, Hoosick Falls; St. Peter’s School, Saratoga; Cardinal McCloskey High School, Albany; and Catholic Central High School, Troy. In addition, Sister Raphael served as health-unit secretary at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham, assistant superior to the A-Wing at the Provincial House and adjunct person for the A-Wing Sisters. At the time of her death, Sister Raphael did community inservice and shared so generously of her time and talents at the Provincial House in many different areas.
Sister Raphael is survived by her dearly loved sister, Virginia Smith, her beloved community, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and many dear friends.
Sister Raphael’s funeral Liturgy was held in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House with interment in the cemetery on the PH grounds.
