Sister Joan Mary Brogle , CSJ, 79, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in St. Joseph 's Hospital, Syracuse . Sister Joan Mary had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 60 years.
Sister Joan Mary, the former Corinne Theresa Brogle , was born in New York City on September 15, 1928, daughter of the late John and Mae Holicz Brogle . After graduating from St. John the Baptist High School in Syracuse , Sister Joan Mary entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph on March 19, 1947. She received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in education, both from The College of Saint Rose, Albany . For 58 years, Sister Joan Mary served in schools of the Syracuse and Albany Dioceses. For the past 29 years, she has served as teacher and attendance office at Bishop Grimes High School , Syracuse .
Sister Joan Mary was a gifted educator who created a classroom atmosphere of shared responsibility and respect for learning. She was able not only to inspire students but also to engage them to achieve their best performance. Sister Joan Mary continued tutoring Sudanese young women until early June. She was a devoted daughter, sister and friend who touched many by her dignity, dedication and gentle presence.
Sister Joan Mary is survived by one sister, Joan Schad of Syracuse, several nieces and nephews and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, with special mention of her dear friend and caretaker, Sister Rosemarie Freitag . In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Virginia Duskee , and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sister Joan Mary's funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Saturday, June 30 in St. Daniel's Church, 3004 Court Street, Syracuse . Interment was in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham.
