Optional 5-week Sessions

Desiring to offer something more to our families on the "off" day of your child's music class or lesson, Carondelet Music Center staff has created a series of electives for currently enrolled students. We plan to offer 2 to 3 electives per semester, depending upon interest. All electives range in cost from $25 (for hour-long sessions)  to $40 (1-and-1/2 hour-long sessions) for the 5-weeks. Students may register for more than one elective per semester. Brochures describing the electives include a registration form. Brochures are available at the Music Center either from your teacher or posted outside of the Music Center Office. There is no registration on-line for electives.

FALL 2011 ELECTIVES:

Story Time

Our first story time will focus on the theme of Autumn. Using the favorite childhood story of The Little Old Woman Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything, Vici Armsby will lead the children (birth to age 3) in imaginative play, sound exploration, and singing. Options for the hour-long session for five weeks include TUESDAYS (1:00-2:00) beginning September 27 OR FRIDAYS (10:00-11:00) beginning September 30. Cost is $25 for currently enrolled music students.

Vici Armsby has been a part of Carondelet Music Center for over 14 years. Vici lives in Brunswick with her husband Doug and two daughters: Liza 15, and Molly 13. Vici obtained her B.A. from Manhattan College in Communication Arts and Sociology with a concentration in performance. While living in NYC, VIci was actively involved in musical dinner theatre and ABC Kids (Acting by Children...Kids in Different Stages) Workshops. Vici is a certified Kindermusik educator and a member of Early Childhood Music and Movement Association (ECCMA).

Carondelet Cleeks: The Clee Project

Following in the favorite TV series GLEE, vocalist Kelly Bird will guide children (ages 8-15) in a Master Class format that will include such activities as preparing for auditions, selecting appropriate music for your age and voice, and interpreting lyrics. Learning from the multiple teaching moments found across genres, from Broadway tunes to Standard melodies, participants will learn from each other through vocal coaching and performance. Students will be given the opportunity to sing and receive feedback, and observe from a group perspective. Sessions will include aspects of musical theatre. Bring your favorite song to the first session!   Accompaniment will be provided. FRIDAYS (6:00-7:00) OR SATURDAYS (1:00-2:00) beginning October 1. Cost is $25 for currently enrolled Music Center students.

Ms. Bird, better known as the "jingle queen" of the Capital Region has performed, written and produced countless radio and television commercials, both regionally and nationally. Kelly is in high demand not only for her amazing sound and dead-on vocal technique, but also for her exceptional reputation working with clients, studio staff and fellow musicians.

Guitar Ensemble

Classical guitarist, John Charles Cook will teach students the many aspects of ensemble-playing in these 5-week hour-and-a half-long sessions. Exploring both classical and pop repertoire, participants will work toward a performance in one of the Center's recitals. Sessions are held on SATURDAYS (10:00-11:30) beginning September 24. Cost is $40 for currently enrolled music students.

John Charles has been performing for over 30 years in the private sector as well as in a variety of public venues. Whether entertaining major corporate businesses or non-profit agencies, performing in a university/college setting, or giving a concert on TV, over the radio, in concert halls or country clubs, he brings a warm and elegant style to each and every performance. He has studied with John Knowles while attending Fisk University (B.A. in Music) and participated in Master Classes with David Tanenbaum at The Hart School of Music.

Instrument-exploration and Experimentation

Sister Patricia will facilitate these hour-long sessions, offering multiple opportunities for children to explore a variety of textures and timbres, experimenting with sound production and instrument-play. Children (ages 3.5 to 5) will improvise on instruments of choice: metals, woods, drums, and barred-instruments. Sound experimentation will evolve to composition and conducting. This 5-week hour-long elective will be held on THURSDAYS (3-4:00) beginning September 29. Cost is $25 for currently enrolled Music Center students.

An accomplished classical pianist, church musician, and researcher, Sister Patricia brings more than 30 years of teaching experience to her early childhood music classes. As a music education researcher, she has presented papers on her work at numerous professional meetings around the world including The International Society of Music Education/Early Childhood Music Commission (Spain, Taiwan, Italy), The Society for Education, Music, and Psychology Research (England), The International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition (Italy), and Music Educators National Conference (USA). Additionally, she has published widely in the field of music, focusing on the social aspects of musical experience and children's active engagement in the music-making process. In addition to her B.S. in Music Education and M.A. in Musicology, she holds a Doctorate in Music and Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University which she completed in 2004. She is the founder and executive Director of Carondelet Music Center.
